Water Main Replacement; Rolling Outages From This Week

88.03.10 Local News Page 14

Workers dig up pipes in a North District lane yesterday.

[Staff Report]

The water department said some mains in the North District were laid more than twenty-five years ago, are badly corroded and leak heavily. They will be replaced area by area starting this week, with completion expected in three months.

Water will be cut off area by area during the work, for about eight hours each time, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dates and areas are posted at each borough office and on the community center notice board.

The department reminded residents to store water before the outage. Water may look cloudy when service returns because of stirred-up sediment in the pipes; run the tap for a few minutes and it should clear. If it stays cloudy, call the service line.

The department added that some road surfaces will be dug up, with warning lights at night; drivers are asked to slow down. Businesses that need a lot of water can apply for a water truck.
