Residents wade through a flooded lane in the North District.

[Staff Report / Reporter Chou Shih-chang, North District]

A typhoon passed through yesterday, flooding many low-lying lanes in the North District knee-deep. Water entered the ground floors of some homes, and the fire department sent pumps to help drain it.

It is understood that the typhoon brought heavy rain, with over 200 millimeters falling on the North District in a single day. Many drains were blocked with trash and could not carry the water away. The sanitation team began clearing gutters across the district yesterday.

Residents said it floods every time it rains hard. "The gutters are too small, and the sewers are old."

Borough chief Chang Chin-shui said the drainage in the North District's older lanes can no longer cope. "Without rebuilding, it'll be the same every year."
